Cosmetologist Continuing Education Information
Renewal
Cosmetologists with an Illinois license(s) who must renew their active license to remain in active status. If your license is expired of inactive, this option is not available to you.
See the required Continuing Education requirements below for your upcoming Renewal:
- 14 hours of Continuing Education (CE). Half of thse hours can be done online.
- Renewals following 2019 must have completed 1 hour of Domestic Voilence/Sexual Assault Awareness training. (A one-time requirement)
Reinstatement
Cosmetologists seeking to reactivate their Illinois license that was allowed to expire or was inactivated by the professional within the last three or five years (depending on thier profession).
See the required Continuing Education requirements below for your Reinstatement Application:
- Submit proof of 14 hours of Continuing Education (CE). Half of these hours can be done online.
- Continuing education credits must include the following:
- 1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention training completed within the past 2 years.
- 1 hour of Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Awareness training. (A one-time requirement)
** Please submit a copy of each CE completion certificate. Rosters are not acceptable.
Restoration
Cosmetologists seeking to reactivate their license to active status due to a disciplinary issue or whose license lapsed more than three or five years ago (depending on their profession).
See the required Continuing Education requirements below for your Restoration Application:
- If you selected the refresher course, submit an official transcript from an approved cosmetology school or an approved barber school, verifying successful completion of at least 250-hours of instruction in the basic curriculum. The refresher course must be completed within two (2) years prior to submitting application.
Endorsement
Cosmetologists applying for Illinois licensure and is already actively licensed in another state.

- Submit verification of 14 hours of continuing education, by a continuing education sponsor approved by the Department, earned within two years immediately preceding the submission of the restoration application.
