Funeral Directors and Embalmers Licensing and Disciplinary Board

Funeral directors and embalmers were brought into the scope of the Agency's regulatory arm in 1919. Funeral directors and embalmers were originally licensed separately. In 1991, the licenses were combined. Funeral directors licensed prior to 1991 may still renew those licenses. New licenses issued, however, must be as a funeral director and embalmer. The practice of funeral directing and embalming means the practice of preparing for the burial, cremation or disposal, and directing and supervising the burial or disposal of deceased human remains, or performing any act or service in connection with the preparing of dead human bodies. The Board is composed of seven members appointed by the Secretary, consisting of six licensed funeral directors and embalmers, and one public member.
