On October 30, 2024, IDFPR launched CORE, a new online system for professionals to apply for licensure in Illinois.
New applications for Music Therapist are among the three initial professions added to CORE to test and ensure system functionality.

License Information
Third-Party Access to Your Application Information
- If you would like another person to ask about the status of your application, such as an employer or advisor, you will need to complete and submit a Third Party Authorization form.
Before Applying for Licensure
Applicants for State of Illinois licensure are required to:
- have completed the academic and clinical requirements for a music therapy program as established by the American Music Therapy Association and
- have successfully completed the CBMT Board Certification Examination.

To Apply to Become a Licensed Professional Music Therapist in the State of Illinois
There are two methods for application: Acceptance of Examination and Endorsement.
For Acceptance of Examination, you will provide evidence of having passed the CBMT Board Certification examination.
For Endorsement, you will need to provide evidence of having practiced in a state that requires licensure for music therapists. If the state where you have been practicing does not license music therapists, you will apply by Acceptance of Examination.

Military Portability
This profession is eligible for Military Portability for Active-Duty service members and their spouses.
